LIFE AS A SUPERMODEL

Supermodel Elle MacPherson has been at the top of the modeling business since 1986. Famously nicknamed 'The Body' by Time Magazine, this six-foot tall Australian was born in 1964. The eldest of four children, she was a teenager when she was discovered by an agent for a modeling agency during a vacation. She started her career by working part-time for two years while studying law at the University of Sydney. Then she quit college and worked full-time for the Click modeling agency in New York. Since then she has gone from strength to strength, featuring on the cover of numerous fashion magazines - including appearing in every issue of Elle magazine for a record six years. She is most famous in the modeling world for appearing five times on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine's annual swimsuit issue. (Her first appearance was in 1986, and her last was 20 years later!) Today, she remains a top international model and an icon of health and beauty.

However, there is much more to Elle than a great body. She has also proved herself to be a superb businesswoman. In 1989 she established her own company and began to produce her own calendars, and a fitness video. A year later saw the launch of her range of women's underwear, Elle MacPherson Intimates. This has proved a huge international success, and turned her company into a multi-million dollar enterprise. Elle runs the company herself, while also continuing to model for top international brands. She even started her own modeling agency in 1994. She is also one of a group of models, including Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer, who own the Fashion Cafe chain of restaurants in New York city. In addition, she has found time to launch her own range of beauty products, called The Body.

Unlike other models, Elle has shown herself to be a talented and natural actor, too. She has appeared in many movies. Her first movie, Alice (1990), was a simple walk-on part, but her acting ability brought her bigger roles, acting alongside top Hollywood stars such as Hugh Grant (Sirens, 1994) and George Clooney (Batman and Robin, 1997). She has also featured in several television programs, and made several appearances in the popular comedy show Friends.

At 21 she married Gilles Bensimon, a photographer and creative director of Elle magazine. They divorced four years later, and for a long time she went out with Swiss businessman Arpade Busson. They had two children together but the couple separated in 2005 after ten years. Her career, however, continues to flourish. In 2009 she began a new TV role as the star in A Beautiful Life, a drama series about the fashion industry!
